Hong Kong Metropolitan University established MARS, an open-access microalgae repository, to support environmental and microalgae research in the Greater Bay Area and Southeast Asia. The center facilitates studies on the identification, preservation, and application of microalgae, with uses in biofuels, bioplastics, and ecological management. Applications include supporting aquaculture, environmental conservation, and new approaches to mitigate harmful algal blooms. By providing access to diverse strains, MARS advances microalgae research and promotes cross-border collaboration. Workshops, a database, and distribution services enhance resource sharing for academic and public benefit.
