Biodegradable Antibacterial Polymers for Medical & Packaging
New Class of pH-Responsive Biodegradable Materials with Antibacterial Properties
Tags: IIT Delhi, India, Healthcare & Lifesciences, Industrial Automation & Manufacturing
A new class of pH-responsive biodegradable polyesters has been developed with enhanced hydrophilicity and antibacterial properties. The technology uses a quaternization approach on N-atoms in the polymer backbone to improve biodegradability and impart antibacterial activity. These materials are particularly relevant for biomedical applications requiring controlled degradation and for packaging industries needing antibacterial biodegradable films. The polymer’s properties can be tuned for various applications using simple, readily available raw materials. A prototype has been developed and characterized in a laboratory setting.
