Compact Electron Beam to Treat Wastewater, Food Irradiation
Superconducting High-Intensity Electron Accelerator for Wastewater Treatment
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Energy & Environment, Agriculture & Food
The Superconducting High-Intensity Electron Accelerator leverages electron beam technology (EBT) to treat wastewater at the molecular level, effectively removing contaminants and pathogens within microseconds without chemicals. Validated at KEK, Japan, the system offers compact, chemical-free wastewater treatment, while the sludge can be repurposed as fertilizer. Applications extend to food irradiation, hospital waste disinfection, and cargo scanning. The technology's rapid, efficient oxidation and reduction reactions make it superior to conventional methods. This innovation supports global sustainability by addressing water scarcity and improving resource utilization.
