IIT Madras has developed an air handling system capable of producing clean drinking water from atmospheric air while also functioning as an air conditioning system. The system integrates a pre-heating unit, moisture addition unit, heat exchanger, and cooling components, achieving water production rates of 600-800 liters per day under optimal conditions. Applications include drinking water dispensers, dehumidifiers, and water-efficient technologies for remote or disaster-affected regions. It provides cost-effective, low-maintenance solutions with water production costs significantly lower than bottled alternatives. The technology is protected by a granted patent (IN 490444), demonstrating its innovative contribution to decentralized water supply and air conditioning.
