Eco-Friendly Plastic Waste to Fuel via Catalytic Cracking
Production of Liquid Fuel from Waste Plastics
Tags: IIT Delhi, India, Energy & Environment, Industrial Automation & Manufacturing
A two-step thermo-catalytic cracking process converts waste plastics into high-quality liquid fuel using a specially designed reactor and metal-loaded zeolite-based catalysts. The process operates at a relatively low temperature (300-400°C) and achieves up to 75% liquid yield with high selectivity for petroleum-range hydrocarbons. The produced fuel has properties comparable to commercial diesel and can be used in engines without further refinement. Applications include plastic recycling industries for sustainable fuel production. A functional prototype has been developed and validated in a simulated environment.
