NYCU’s research team, led by Professor Sheh-Yi Sheu, developed a new seawater desalination method using amyloid protein, typically associated with Alzheimer’s disease. This biomimetic nanomaterial effectively blocks salt ions while allowing water molecules to pass through, achieving 100% desalination without external energy. The amyloid nanotubes act as molecular motors, creating an energy-efficient alternative to traditional reverse osmosis. Applications include large-scale freshwater production from seawater. The technology offers a sustainable solution for water resource shortages caused by climate change.
