Electron beam welding (EBW) was used to join an aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, Al 2219-T6, because it produces very strong joints with minimal heat damage to surrounding areas, which is critical for alloys that are sensitive to heat. The process ensures a precise and robust weld, making it ideal for aerospace applications where strength and minimal material distortion are essential. By using EBW, the researchers aimed to improve the alloy’s performance while maintaining the integrity of the metal structure.
