HFM-Based Device Enhances Safety in Laparoscopic Surgeries
Corona Surrogate Virus Trapping Device
Tags: IIT Bombay, India, Healthcare & Lifesciences
Researchers have developed a hollow fiber membrane (HFM)-based device to trap viruses, including surrogate coronaviruses, from pneumoperitoneum gas streams in laparoscopic surgeries. The device integrates a porous HFM module with a UV lamp for enhanced safety, achieving up to 98.99% bacterial removal and a 10⁵ reduction in viral load. Applications include protecting healthcare workers in operating theaters by significantly reducing viral exposure during surgeries. The device is ready for demonstration and transfer to industry, offering a low-cost solution for pandemic response in surgical settings. A patent is in process, highlighting the innovation's potential to safeguard frontline workers.
