CSIR-National Chemical Laboratory [CSIR-NCL]: This technology involves a process for converting methanol to formaldehyde using a zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocatalyst. The ZnO catalyst, specifically its (101̅1) facet, facilitates the conversion at room temperature and atmospheric pressure with 100% selectivity. The process leverages periodic density functional theory (DFT) to understand the interaction between methanol and ZnO, making it highly efficient and thermodynamically favorable. This technology is applicable in chemical manufacturing, where formaldehyde is a key intermediate.
