IIT Delhi has developed a dielectric rod-based mechanical tuning technique for Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) circuits, enabling reconfigurability of filters, antennas, and phase shifters. The approach involves replacing dielectric rods within air holes in SIW circuits, altering their relative permittivity to shift frequency response or phase shift values. This method eliminates the need for external DC bias, reducing power consumption and improving reliability. Applications include multiband communication systems, software-defined radio, and radar technologies. A functional prototype has been fabricated, and the proof of concept has been demonstrated in a laboratory environment, with multiple Indian patents filed.
