Polymer-Enhanced LCDs: Cheaper, High Contrast, Fast Response
Polymer Beads Dispersed Liquid Crystal Devices (PBLCD)
Tags: National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, Consumer Goods & Services, Electronics & Robotics
This technology enhances the electro-optical properties of cholesteric liquid crystal display (LCD) devices by adding polymer beads with varying concentrations, eliminating the need for traditional alignment layers. The polymer beads are modified with surfactants, improving contrast, lowering threshold voltage, and increasing response time. Chiral particles are also included to further boost performance. Applications include LCD displays, smart windows, and field-sequential color displays. The process simplifies LCD fabrication and reduces manufacturing costs.
