IIT Madras has developed an optical sensor based on U-bent silica optic fiber coated with a metal-organic framework (ZIF-67) for detecting hexavalent chromium (Cr6+). The sensor demonstrates high selectivity and sensitivity by leveraging the intrinsic optical absorption of Cr6+ ions around 395 nm and remains stable for over a month. Applications include monitoring water quality, blood testing, and ensuring environmental compliance in industries like healthcare, food, and mining. This portable and cost-effective sensor provides a wide dynamic range and can be integrated into handheld devices for on-field use. The technology is protected by a granted patent (IN 202141023371), reflecting its innovative approach to heavy metal detection.
