Portable Quantum Cluster Method for Rapid TNT Detection
Methods for Selective Visual Detection of TNT
Tags: IIT Madras, India, Security & First Responders
IIT Madras has developed a selective visual detection method for trinitrotoluene (TNT) using silica-coated gold and silver quantum clusters. This method allows rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective detection with minimal false alarms, leveraging the formation of a Meisenheimer complex between TNT and functionalized clusters. Applications include counterterrorism, forensic investigations, border control, and environmental remediation. The system’s high sensitivity and portability enable real-time monitoring in security, defense, and safety sectors. A granted patent (IN 442508) protects the technology, highlighting its innovation in TNT detection and environmental safety.
