Researchers from National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Harvard University have identified herbicides, such as propyzamide, as compounds that stimulate immune responses and exacerbate intestinal inflammation. Using bioinformatics and zebrafish models, they predicted and confirmed that propyzamide disrupts dioxin receptors and triggers immune-related inflammation, worsening inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This discovery highlights the role of environmental factors, in addition to genetics, in IBD prevalence, especially in Taiwan. The team is now exploring nanoparticles and probiotics to mitigate herbicide-induced IBD. Applications include understanding environmental risks to IBD and developing targeted treatments for those exposed to agricultural chemicals.
