Ultra-High GAG Biomaterial for Advanced Disc Regeneration
Novel Biomaterial with Ultra High Content of GAG
Tags: The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, Healthcare & Lifesciences
This innovation introduces a novel biomaterial with ultra-high glycosaminoglycan (GAG) content, closely mimicking the structure and function of native nucleus pulposus (NP) in intervertebral discs (IVDs). With a GAG-to-collagen ratio exceeding 27, this biomaterial supports primary NP cell growth and exhibits mechanical properties comparable to natural IVD tissue. Applications include artificial disc replacement, injectable biomaterials for disc degeneration treatment, and tissue engineering scaffolds. The technology addresses a critical need in non-fusion spinal surgery and regenerative medicine, offering biocompatible solutions for an aging population. A PCT patent application has been filed, and the invention is open for development and licensing partnerships.
